About Printing fabric

I've been looking for the ideal fabric to make curtains out of, and I have not found what I'm looking for (Vintage Atomic Age Retro prints are a little pricey). So, I'm thinking about designing my own.

I found a nice, slightly metallic, silver polyester that would look great with some cool block prints on it, but I'm not sure if polyester will take the ink/paint well... I'm also not sure what kind of ink/paint to use... The cheapo acrylic craft paints should work well, but I might want to use fabric paint? or printing ink?

and then there's making the printing blocks. I think that cardboard might work well for a quick and disposable block surface?
